John Roberts

I caught a few minutes of the hearings today. He sounded reasonable. Judge's have a way of surprising you. President Eisenhower was once asked if he had ever made a mistake, he answered yes and two of them are on the Supreme Court.

Nobody asked me, but after viewing the confirmation hearings it is quite clear that Roberts is a man of sharp intellect. OF course, he never would have been nominated to the high court if he was not of a great legal knowledge (only exception to this tradition was the appt. of Clarence Thomas, who in the opinion of His Holiness, is a buffoon). We have a conservative president, and he will appoint what he feels to be conservatives to the court. As Gort pointed out, however, this will not be a guarantee; Good LUck Chief Justice Roberts and Good Luck AMerica.

As of noon on the 29th of Sept. Judge Roberts has been confirmed Chief Justice of the High COurt. Now the ten thousand dollar question is whom will Bush choose to succeed Sandy O'Connor? Given the President's falling poll numbers is it possible he will choose a non-controversial candidate? True, the left will protest any pick of W's but it will be interesting to see whom gets the nod. HIs Holiness' personal belief: Atty. Gen. Gonzalez--but, alas we shall see.
