Baker leads battle of bucks

The most recent campaign finance reports confirm what was expected: Lisa Baker is the runaway leader in raising and spending cash among Republican candidates vying for the 20th District seat of retiring state Sen. Charles Lemmond.

Baker, who worked for Lemmond as an aide and has been endorsed by the outgoing senator, reported $290,346 in campaign expenses during the report period running Jan. 1 to May 1. The filing deadline was Friday afternoon.

Jim Haggerty spent the second highest total in the five-candidate contest for the Republican primary. Haggerty, an attorney and Kingston mayor, reported $146,733 in expenses and $1,939 in remaining funds.

Dallas chiropractor David Madeira reported $55,443 in campaign expenses and $10,585 in remaining funds

Russ Bigus, a principal at Regis Elementary School in Forty Fort and a Dallas School Board member, reported $7,165 in contributions by March 27. His latest report was not available Friday.

Carl Sutton, a Dallas Township resident and psychotherapist, says he is running a low-budget campaign, and his campaign finance report was not available.

The latest reports do not cover the last two weeks before the primary election on May 16.
