State Rep. Eddie Day Pashinski is having his annual September Brunch at Genetti's in Wilkes-Barre on Sunday at 11AM.
This event always draws a big crowd and in 2013 our future Governor scored some major points with the locals by greeting everyone at the door.
It's curious that there is nothing on the intertubes about this gathering. Pashinski doesn't have a Facebook campaign page and his campaign website hasn't been updated in a few years.
I have always been a supporter of our local chapters of the Young Democrats and Young Republicans in Luzerne County . Both outfits have very generous to me over the years.
Just looking at their Facebook pages they both have been dormant since 2013 so it's good to see one of the organizations getting back in gear.
2016 is a very important Presidential Election and no matter who you
are supporting it is important to come out to get the ball rolling. In
addition 2015 can be a great opportunity to get a new crop of Democrats
elected on the Municipal level and get geared up for the 2016 Primary
and General Election. We will also discuss officer elections and possibly be joined by 2015 candidates!
Thanks YDs President Thomas Shubilla
Membership is open to anyone under 36 who is a
registered Democrat. Please come participate. We will elect board
members and discuss future plans.
Note that this is the Plains Township location at 1092 Rt 315 Wilkes Barre, PA 18702.
I hope to see the Young Republicans become active again. Under Bob Zaruta they put on a great event Youth in Politics. Frank Mazza is now the President but he is busy working for Pat Toomey and is a Temple fan
Thom Shubilla is hosting an event for Lt. Governor candidate Mark Smith tonight at Leggio's on Rte 315 near the Woodlands. It starts at 6PM.
Smith is a Bradford County Commissioner and a critic of the Corbett administration like all the other LG candidates. Thom sent me an invitation a few weeks ago in snail mail but the campaign has done a piss poor job of promoting the event. There is not an events page on Smiths website or a mention on his Facebook page. Nothing on Thom's FB page or a press release. I'm a blogger and need to link to things.
State Representative Eddie Day Pashinski (D) wants to go back to Harrisburg for another term and over 100 of his friends gathered at Genetti's in Wilkes-Barre to support him on Sunday for brunch.
Tom Wolf
Exeter Mayor Cassandra Coleman-Corcoran organized the event and PA Governor hopeful Tom Wolf greeted people at the door.
W-B council member Maureen Lavelle showed her support and West Wyoming's Eileen Cipriani represented Phyllis Mundy who is plunging in the rankings. Only two 2013 candidates were in the crowd. County Council Democratic nominee Eileen Sorokas and Republican Controller replacement candidate Carolee Medico- Olenginski.
Carmen Ambrosino and Mrs. A
A real treat for me was I had breakfast with my committeeman and Young Dem Prez Thom Shubilla and local legend Carmen Ambrosino who has spent his career helping people with abuse
problems. Luzerne County Democratic chair Bob Boyer was late to the party.
Eddie Day gave what can only be described as a populist speech. He ripped into Governor Tom Corbett for his attempts to privatize all sorts of government function including education, liquor stores and the lottery. He described the voter ID law as cheating as it would disenfranchise 700,000 people. He reminded the audience that all elections are big elections as the school director and city councilor affect you life as much as a President. He reminded us that the common man can stand up to the billionaires just by casting a vote.
Eddie Day and family
So far I haven't heard of anyone planning to run against him. I hope a Republican candidate emerges soon. We should always have a choice in an election.
Tiffany Cloud is the hostess of Storm Politics on WYLN in Hazelton which has become one of my favorite public affairs programs on TV. She also wrote the great book Sleeping with Dog Tags . The thing about Tiffany is that she welcomes all comers and has a great discussion with people she disagrees with that doesn't turn into a talking head shouting match like you see on the cable news channels.
In the latest episode she handed out the Lightening Bolt Awards. Cloud, Storm, Lightening the weather metaphors are endless. May I suggest the Snow Job Awards for next year.
The winner is Yasue Bengali, a Japanese immigrant to the US who recently became a citizen and explains how great this county is as only an immigrant could.
The honorable mentions of other people who have appeared on her show is a mix of Democratic and Republican office holders plus those that will be elected in the future or never at all.
Some Bolts went out to Aaron Kaufer, Matt Cartwright, Tarah Toohil, Stefanie Salavantis and Lou Barletta.Young Republicans Bob Zaruta and Jen Rinehamer and Young Dem Thom Shibula along with the happiest man I know, Casey Evans.
In December of last year I was her guest on Storm Politics and David Yonki has also been on the program and we came in 9th. I think she gives us too much credit for the election results but I'll take it. To answer her question of why anyone would push the liberal agenda in these economic times is simple. Austerity doesn't work. You don't cut spending when the economy is down and if anything the government's goal should be to get the unemployment rate down to 4%. The US government is borrowing money right now at a negative interest rate when you factor in inflation. Borrow more and put people to work! She said the conservatives are being outsmarted by these 2 lovers of the left. Hah!
The highlight of this clip is at the 2 minute mark.
In the 2010 primary election DB Echo of Another Monkey was elected as a Luzerne County Democratic Committeeman from Nanticoke. By his own admission he was "written in by a friend as a joke and won." To his credit he has taken his responsibilities as an officer of the party seriously going to as many meetings that he can make. He even keeps local Bloggers informed of the activities of the outfit even if the Chair is apprehensive about letting Bloggers know what is going on.
Now the Blogfather may become a Republican Committeeman in Wilkes-Barre.He got a vote or 2 but so did someone else.
Most, if not all, ties occurred because no candidates filed paperwork to get
their names on the ballot. Voters wrote in names on the electronic voting machines, prompting multiple people to receive the
same number of votes, in some cases one vote each....The election office will choose winners using numbered balls shaken in a
container. Balls will be picked for candidates who don’t appear.
He looked at mounting a serious campaign after being encouraged but got sidetracked because of the loss of a family member. He has never been high on the local Republican Party saying I took my unexpected call to join the local GOP scrum as the equivalent of
being General George Armstrong Custer's replacement bugler during that final
gallop into history. Sad, but blatantly honest on my part.
If he does win the ping pong ball selection and follows through he will be as welcomed at a 6th District Republican Committee meeting like ants at a picnic.
A few years ago some people wanted me to run for Democratic Committeeman in my little corner of Plains Twp. to replace the invisible man, a guy that lives a block away but never met. I took a pass because of my work schedule and blogging activities. I'm glad I did because now my committee guy is Thom Shibula .He also was elected to the state committee and will be a delegate to the DNC in Charlotte. Thom does the work of an old fashion local precinct captain like dropping off yard signs at my house. I haven't heard if he could deliver a ton of coal.
I was only voter number 212 out of 1000+ at my polling place at 5PM. We ran into State and Luzerne County Committee candidate Thomas Shibula along with GSC member Chris Kersey working the polls. I was happy to give Thom my vote. There was one person handing out Tom Leighton cards and that was it for poll workers. Only 3 people which is typical for mid-term elections. The real action is always in the local primary elections.
Below is a great picture of Lou Barletta voting with his grandson Gabriel along for the ride.
Here is the 2nd installment of guest posts from candidates for the Republican and Democratic State Committees. The full list is on the Luzerne County website.
Hello, My name is Thomas Shubilla, candidate for Democratic State Committee. I was born, raised, and currently reside in Plains Township, attended Bishop O'Reilly High School and graduated from King's College with a Bachelors Degree in Mass Communications.
The question I have been asked most often is, “Why are you running for Democratic State Committee?”.
The answer is simple, because I am committed to the Democratic Party and the party's principles. I am not committed to one individual candidate. Instead I am committed to electing Democrats in the general election, and endorsing the candidates that embody principles of the party in the Democratic Primary, such a commitment to keeping the Democratic Party the party of progress, labor, and working families.
I have made 4 campaign promises, these promises I will keep-
-Increase voter participation, registration and communication
-Make informed decisions on the adoption of party resolutions and goals
-Support the socio-economic concerns of labor
-Organize the Democratic Party to better meet the needs of the people
My involvement in politics began in 2006 when I interned for the Democratic Coordinated Campaign in Wilkes-Barre. My duties were, but not limited to, office management, volunteer recruitment, voter identification, and special events coordinator. In 2008 I volunteered for Obama for America, by canvasing neighborhoods, making phone calls and serving as Staging Location Director during both the primary and general election. I was a the treasurer and assisted in the organization of Luzerne Home Rule which passed in Luzerne County with 88% of the vote. In the general election in 2009 I assisted all Democratic Candidates in their election bids.
If elected I will continue my involvement and will work hard for the Democratic Party. I am located first on the ballot and I would appreciate your vote!
Thank you for your consideration, Thomas M. Shubilla
