Back in action

All my MAC fans are beating me up because I decided to stay with a Window's machine. Anyway I have new tower with a faster CPU and 4x the RAM. Not all of my programs are loaded but I'm working on it, any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks to Bob,Sr. and the crew at Custom Computers in Kingston for building a machine with the features I wanted. The best thing about dealing with a local company is when I need help or have questions I'm calling across the river not the other side of the world.

Please stand by

My computer has some serious hardware and software issues so I'm going to be out of action for the next few days because my new tower is ready and the good folks at Custom Computers need to transfer my data from the old machine.
I ask for the patience of my regular readers and the people who find Gort42 by accident. We hope to resume regular programming by the end of the week.

I'm under attack

Thats what Norton tells me. Not that Norton, this one . This is one of biggest pains owning a PC. So now I'm running anti virus scans and the other protection against malware, adware and underpants gnomes. Profit!

I know Michelle and Dr. Joe will tell me to buy a Mac but I'm not comfortable buying something that expensive off a website without local support. I think the closest Apple store is in Allentown.

I bought the computer that I have in 2005 from Custom Computer in Kingston, PA. They have been outstanding with their customer support. Whenever I have a problem or question I'm calling a place across the river not on the other side of the world.

It's fixed

My computer underwent a successful hard drive transplant and all systems seem to be working fine. The good folks at Custom Computers in Kingston ordered the parts, installed them , gave it a good cleaning and made sure the thing wasn't haunted by worms or Trojan Horses, etc. Bob Sr., Chris and the crew have been great to work with over the years. Whenever I have had a problem or question I pick up the phone and call across the river instead of the other side of the planet. I highly recommend them.

Computer Problems

I'm not sure that this will even post.

The last few weeks I've had a problem loading IE7. I click on the icon and the widow opens then nothing happens. I do an end task then try it again and it usually opened on the 2nd or 3rd try. Today IE7 won't open at all and Firefox is running very slow plus I can't get into some of my offline apps such as pictures and documents. I re-ran all the protection software that is supposed to be running all the time and I still have the problem. Even disckeeper froze up.

So it looks like I will be offline for a few days while my tower makes a visit to Custom Computer for an exorcism unless someone can email or call me with a fix. My Yahoo email is still accessible but running very slow and I can't get into Facebook at all.

Update: My machine needs a new hard drive and a memory chip. I should be back online Thursday.

Deep six IE8

A few weeks ago I installed Internet Explorer 8 and have had all sorts of problems ever since. It either wouldn't load or hung up when I was trying to surf the web. I also use Firefox but there are some things, like loading pictures, that are done easier with Explorer. So after running end task all the time and reporting the problem without getting a response I got fed up and unistalled IE8. It was surprisingly easy, the instructions are here:

How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8?

Now I'm back to IE7 and all is well.

A week without a computer

It has been both frustrating and liberating not having an intertubes machine for the past week. It was frustrating because I do so many things online like manage my checking and brokerage accounts and of course keep up with the latest political news. It was liberating because of wasting 2 or 3 hours a day staring at a monitor I accomplished a bunch of stuff on my honey do list. Mrs. G said to leave the thing in the shop.
.
The technical problem was a heat sink failed that resulted in frying my video card. The good folks at Custom Computers in Kingston ordered the parts, installed them , gave it a good cleaning and made sure the thing wasn't haunted by worms or Trojan Horses, etc. Bob Sr., Steve and the crew have been great to work with over the years. Whenever I have had a problem or question I pick up the phone and call across the river instead of the other side of the planet. I highly recommend them.
.
Checking my snail mail I found that I did get an official looking letter from a Mr. Carlson but Quincy got a hold of it before I read it and tore it to shreds. If it's important I'm sure he will send me another. If he really wants to get a hold of me he should contact me by email. The USPS is so 18th Century.
.
I was planning to finish the interview series with Republican Controller candidates Alice Coffman and Walter Griffith but the computer failure put the kibosh to that. My apologies to both. Walter has been a hot topic in the local blogosphere because of an incident that happened many moons ago. I've known about it for a long time but didn't think it was relevant. Another blogger thought it was despite my urging to leave it alone and now he is experiencing the blowback. Walter made the mistake of engaging in the comments of that post despite the counsel of me and several other local internet scribes to just ignore it.
.
I wanted to put up some polls on the various races this past week and still will. So here we go.
