LWV bans audio and video recording of 11th CD forum
The LWV says that will not be allowed and furthermore no person of any kind will be allowed to record anything in any way during the debate, neither audio or video. I guess that means the local TV stations won't be able to send a camera crew and print reporters can't use a recorder to ensure the accuracy in quoting the candidates.
I'm not sure how they plan to enforce this rule. If I show up will I be frisked at the door by a league member looking for a contraband recording device? Will they call the cops if I turn it on?
Bill Vinsko says he's OK with this.
Attached are the rules that we were provided to me by the LWV. I will follow their rules.
I am looking forward to the debate.
In a letter to the candidates dated April 2nd rule 12 states "No taping or other recording will be permitted at the forum."
On the other hand Gene Stilp is squealing like a pig (sorry, I couldn't resist) over this decision.
In a letter to the LWV he said:
It is time to again correct the League and state that the debate must be fully open to the press. Bring back Service Electric so that the debate can be rebroadcast for all those who are interested but cannot attend. Let the Channel 28,16, 22 and whoever record video and audio. Let the radio stations record the debate. Let the social media record and put it on Facebook and Twitter. Let the written press utilize whatever devices they need (they do audio and video also for their websites) and put it in the morning papers.
While I appreciate your efforts to conduct a debate you must remember that this is America. This is Pennsylvania. This is the Wyoming Valley. We still have the First Amendment here and the League should be fighting to enhance the First Amendment not to censor it.
Holden camp claims 10 point lead
Pennsylvania: Challenger’s Poll Shows Tim Holden Trailing
Eric Nagy, Holden’s campaign manager, said their own campaign polling showed the Congressman ahead — although he declined to give any more details about the survey.
“Our polling shows us up by 10 points, but we’re not taking any chances,” Nagy said. “We will run like we’re down 10 points.”
We all know to take internal polls with a grain of salt but it has been my experience that polling outfits that tell you what you want to hear instead of what is actually going on don't last long in this business. Credibility is everything since it costs about $20,000 to a Congressional District poll.
There seems to be other dynamics going on in this race. Holden is the longtime incumbent that has lined up all the endorsements from elected officials, labor unions and Democratic county committees. He seems to be winning the yard sign primary especially since Cartwright's turn into kites on a windy day. But most of the voters in this newfangled district don't know who he is and Matt Cartwright is the hometown boy from Moosic in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre market. I don't know how much his TV show, The Law and You, raised his name recognition as I have never seen it. The Munley, Munley and Cartwright law firm spots can't hurt as far as putting his name out there even if you're like me and wish the ban on lawyer ads had never been lifted.
Then there is an anti-incumbent mood of the electorate.
I was thinking along the same lines but I don't want to be accused of plagiarism.
Steve Singiser in KOS
But, it would seem that the general level of discontent felt by the electorate has manifested itself in what can be described as at least a moderately hostile environment for incumbents. My educated guess? Mean Jean won't be the only incumbent out of a job by the end of this primary cycle, and that modestly "pissed off" mood in the electorate may well lead to a more volatile November at the House level than we previously might've guessed or thought. It may not be uniformly good news for Republicans or Democrats, by the way. I merely suspect that incumbents with halfway decent challengers might be more imperiled this year than most analysts are currently willing to admit.
This comment on my last post got my hackles up.
Where did they take this poll, Glenmaura? Do you print word for word anything Matt Cartwright sends you? A little while back you and another one of the far left blogs ran a story that read exactly same. The poll I heard about had Holden up by well over double digits. Anyway we can agree there is only one poll that counts and thats in 2 weeeks. Unfortunatly for Cartwright the campaign finance reports are due in a few days, then we'll see how much he raised and how much Mitt, opps I mean Matt put in from his own fortune. I'm sure it will be put down as a loan paid back at a nice interest rate.
I posted the PR without my own comments because I thought it was news and was pressed for time. I would be happy to do the same thing for the Holden camp if you guys would add me to your distribution list and I'm very surprised that an Internet savvy guy like Trippi doesn't have a staffer doing blogger outreach. The only Internet presence the Holden campaign has is trolling the comments of this and other sights like PoliticsPA. As far as another trendy lefty posting a similar story all I can say is that great minds think alike. You must be new to this blog as I have been accused of being a Republican more than once especially when I write about Luzerne County politics. The CFR's are inside baseball and I like the Glenmura and Mitt references, jolly good show chap. Well done.

Poll: Cartwright leads Holden
Holden Falls Behind
Poor Poll Numbers Result in Desperate, Nasty Ads
MOOSIC, PA – Recent polling in Pennsylvania’s newly drawn 17th Congressional district shows Matt Cartwright leading Tim Holden with less than three weeks until the Primary. (The poll was conducted April 2-5 with 600 likely Democratic Primary voters.)
Matt Cartwright now leads 42-36 against the 20-year incumbent. The Cartwright campaign has not yet mentioned Holden in any advertising, while Holden has started his second negative ad, an obvious result of his own polling. Just as troubling for Holden is the fact that he is running in a district where his vote to create the Halliburton Loophole and his vote against President Obama’s groundbreaking Health Care Reform are highly unpopular.
“While I’ve been focusing on issues that affect the lives of the people I seek to represent, Tim Holden has focused on me,” points out Matt Cartwright. “He can’t win on his record, so he wants to tear me down. This is politics at its worst. The say anything, do anything approach to win at all cost. I learned from my father to always tell the truth and to never tear down another man just to build yourself up.”
Tim Holden has refused to hold any debates. He is in the middle of a two week congressional recess, yet his website lists an office opening on March 31st as his most recent campaign event.
“Again, if he discusses his voting record, he loses,” says Cartwright. “So he hides behind nasty TV ads. The people of northeastern Pennsylvania deserve better.”
Matt Cartwright is a Democrat, running for Congress in the 17th Congressional District, which now includes parts of Carbon, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe and Northampton Counties, as well as all of Schuylkill County. Cartwright is running for Congress to bring jobs to Northeast Pennsylvania, and make sure that corporations and wealthy Americans pay their fair share of taxes.

More Nonsense from Holden
Chronicling Mitt's Mendacity, Vol. XII
In this ad Holden asserts that Matt Cartwright is bored buying new cars and has mansions and Condo's in Florida
The whole quote tells us something different
From Kos: "I've come to the point in my life that either I do it now or I don't do it… I'm 50 years old. I don't get a bang out of buying a new car anymore. I get a bang out of helping people."
I'm also north of 50 and those that know me realize that I can care less about the latest Gizmo. I don't even have a cell phone! Your're slaves to that machine.
Matt hit back on the Juvie Brothers nonsense
Meet the candidates
Pittston Politics reports the powers that be will having a Happy Hour for Congressman Tim Holden on Friday, April 13th from 5pm-7pm at Bo Brother's Restaurant. Let's hope he shows up.
Thursday is going to be a busy day. Democratic 11th CD candidates Bill Vinsko and Gene Stilp will face off at Wyoming Seminary at the same time and the Luzerne County Democratic Committee has a rally scheduled at the Ramada on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre. So far Holden has refused to debate Cartwright.

PA Attorney General candidates stay positive on the air
Both candidates tell us how tough they are.
Gene greets Mitt

“Any energy policy that allows exports on the world market to make profit is not patriotic and certainly does not give us energy independence,” Barrett said.
Laureen Cummings for Congress Kickoff
Cummings will make a formal announcement on Wednesday.
Laureen Cummings, Republican Candidate for Congress, Pennsylvania's 17th District, will make her Luzerne County campaign announcement in front of the Luzerne County Courthouse at 5:30 PM on April 11.Laureen Cummings is a nurse and small business owner from Old Forge, Pennsylvania.
She is running for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District.Laureen will fight to restore our Republic. She wants to stop runaway spending, reduce our massive deficit, and end the intrusion of government into our lives.
Laureen will fight to repeal Obamacare. She agrees with most Americans that Obamacare is unconstitutional.
Laureen wants a responsible national energy policy. People are suffering with high energy costs while our natural resources are not being developed properly. This also puts our security at risk by our dependency on the Middle East.
Laureen will work to repeal Dodd-Frank. As a small business owner herself, she knows that repealing Dodd-Frank will encourage small business owners to grow their businesses and create jobs!
Laureen is a staunch Pro-Life candidate. She stands on the side of the unborn and the elderly.
Laureen is a strong supporter of 2nd Amendment rights. The right of the people to keep and bear arms should not be infringed.
Laureen wants to abolish the IRS. She supports instead the Fair Tax plan, an uncomplicated and fair plan that replaces our current Byzantine tax system with a national sales tax that eliminates federal income and payroll taxes.
Laureen will work to eliminate costly, unnecessary bureaucracy. Smaller government is essential to the future growth and prosperity of our Nation.
Laureen knows what it is to struggle in life. She worked hard to earn her nursing degree and later started her own home health care and staffing business. She is the mother of four grown children and the proud grandmother of three. She is passionate about assuring that we leave our children and grandchildren an America of greater opportunity and undiminished freedom. She is active in Pennsylvania politics, working hard to get people involved at the grassroots level.
Laureen Cummings is, and always will be, a fighter. Now she wants to fight for you by representing Pennsylvania’s 17th Congressional District in Washington, DC.

Stilp and Vinsko will get together
I love the LWV but if this is like most of their past events it won't be a debate but more of a "forum" that will bore the pants off of you.
Holy Thursday

It's Opening Day of Baseball! I can't believe that some idiot scheduled Easter on the same weekend that MLB get's started. The banged up Phillies get it going against the Pirates a 1:30PM today.

I'm up early and well caffeinated. The Yuengling Lager is on ice and will light up the grill about the 7th inning.
Our long national winter nightmare is over. It's time for Baseball!
Tim Holden goes negative, Cartwright hits back
Hired gun Campaign Manager Joe Trippi who's claim to fame was the 2004 Howard Dean Presidential campaign has put out one of the most dishonest ads I've seen tying Cartwright to the juvie brothers scandal because he gave some money to Callahan and Ciavarella years before the 'kids for cash scandal' broke. It's interesting that the successor group of the Dean campaign, Democracy for America, has endorsed Cartwright.
Joe has to make a living and this line of attack helped Stefanie Salavantis become the Luzerne County District Attorney so he has some good local researchers. We will see how that works out.
So Cartwright gave $1375 to Ciavarella's retention effort just like many other lawyers which raises the question should judge's be elected or appointed after a vetting process. Judges on Merit has more to say on this subject. Conahan may not have been selected after a background check.
Instead of what is going out we should take a look at what is coming in.
DWT has a summery:
Holden, a Blue Dog has taken $688,999 from the finance industry and $414,997 from Big Oil and Gas. Holden has taken even more money from AgriBusiness and he's scooping up checks like mad this year to fight off his first serious electoral challenge ever. [One of the company's eager to keep Holden in Congress is AT&T, which has given House Republicans $896,121 thisyear and House Democrats $443,750. $5,000 of that went to Holden.
The Pennsylvania Progressive tells us about Holden's voting record:
He did not vote for the Affordable Care Act, voted against organized labor, for wars and their funding, for the National Defense Authorization Act, for the PATRIOT Act, FISA wiretapping and against homeowners trying to avoid foreclosure.
A Statement from the Cartwright campaign calls Holden a liar:
Holden Barely Holding On
Desperate TV Ad Not Just A Distortion - It’s 180° from Truth
MOOSIC, PA – With three weeks left until the April 24th Primary Election, Tim Holden has resorted to mud slinging. Perhaps the poll he conducted last week showed poor numbers, and he acted out of desperation. One thing is for sure, however, he forgot to do his homework.
Holden’s TV ad attempts to link Matt Cartwright with the notorious “Kids for Cash” scandal that plagued Luzerne County back in 2008, by citing old campaign contributions from the Munley, Munley and Cartwright law firm to the judges involved. (The firm has supported dozens of Democrats in the past 25 years.) But Holden’s “guilt by old association” tactic was done without knowing enough about the county or Matt Cartwright.
In the wake of the scandal, Matt Cartwright spearheaded the Juvenile Defense Lawyer Project in Luzerne County to ensure that juveniles were treated fairly by the courts and judges. In fact, in a Times-Leader article on June 11, 2010, Cartwright was “recognized for his leadership of the Juvenile Pro Bono Defense Program, which was created to guarantee pro bono counsel for juveniles that had been adjudicated by former President Judge Mark Ciavarella in the event their cases were retried.”
If anything, Matt Cartwright was a hero in cleaning up the criminal mess that these judges created.
“Tim Holden spent the past 20 years in Washington, and this is what he decided to talk about,” said Cartwright. “Of course, it is not surprising that Holden does not want to discuss the facts that he voted to create the Halliburton Loophole and against Health Care Reform. Further, in 2001 and in 2002 he voted with President George W. Bush more than any other Democratic member of Pennsylvania’s Congressional Delegation.”

Join Mitt Romney in Tunkhannock today for a fracking good time
The Romney campaign said the former Massachusetts governor will appear at 2:45 p.m. at Mountain Energy Services Inc., 16 Creekshore Road, Tunkhannock. The site is on Route 92 just north of Route 6 and Deer Park Lumber.
Mountain Energy provides equipment for the natural gas drilling industry.
The latest PPP poll has Romney taking the lead over former Senator Rick Santorum (R-VA).
Romney takes the lead in Pennsylvania
Mitt Romney's taken the lead in PPP's newest poll of Rick Santorum's home state of Pennsylvania. Romney has 42% to 37% for Santorum with Ron Paul at 9% and Newt Gingrich at 6%. The numbers represent a dramatic turnaround from when PPP polled the state a month ago. Romney's gained 17 points, going from 25% to 42%. Meanwhile Santorum's dropped 6 points from 43% to 37%, for an overall swing of 23 points in the last four weeks.
Rick is running to be the GOP frontrunner 2016 but if he loses PA in this election after getting blown out in 2006 that may end that hope.
A welcome committee led by Gene Stilp will be there to greet him.
Friends -
Mitt Romney is going to be in the 11th District, in Tunkhannock, on Thursday, to visit a manufacturing plant that supplies and operates equipment used for fracking. We need to send him a message about the dangers of fracking. I invite you to join me and Pignelope, the Pink Pig to tell him that this process and its effects are wrong!
Help Gene Meet Mitt!
Thursday, April 5th - 2:00pm
Lazy Brook Park
Tunkhannock, PA
(Put 16 Creekshore Road - Tunkhannock in your GPS)
Let's show Mitt Romney that fracking will pollute our water supply and harm our environment for decades to come. Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg with the problems with fracking. Mitt Romney has no idea what his buddy, Tom Corbett has done to let the gas companies off the hook. Help me tell him what Tom Corporate has done to give them tax breaks after they contributed over a million dollars to his campaign.
This is your chance to put your clean water advocate in Congress. Gene has fought for the Susquehanna and our environment for years.

Kathleen Kane taking more hits
Tuesday, things got more complicated. As a guest on a live call-in program on the Pennsylvania Cable Network, she had an exchange with a caller. Ms. Kane: "So, Pat, your question is, am I a supporter of card check?" PCN host: "He's not on the line, but that sounds like his question."
Ms. Kane: "That sounds like your question. I am not a supporter."...
Friday, her campaign issued a statement saying she's proud of her husband's success and she's "pro-union because it's in my blood and because I believe that America does best when it has a strong, growing middle class."
The statement also said she supports the Employee Free Choice Act, and as attorney general would defend the right to organize unions. It was a contradiction of what she seemed to say on PCN.
Her family's trucking company is non union.
Vote Vets will be having a conference call about the AG race later today.
Recently, the campaign of Kathleen Kane has demeaned the service of Patrick Murphy in the US Army, by claiming he has not been a prosecutor, despite the hundreds of cases he tried in the Army. Further, she has made an issue of him not taking the Pennsylvania Bar Exam, even though his commanding officer recommended he take another bar, and he was given a waiver from taking the Pennsylvania bar because of his years of service in the military.
TOMORROW, TUESDAY, APRIL 3, 2012 AT 10AM, veterans from VoteVets.org PAC, which has endorsed Murphy, will hold a conference call to call on the Kane campaign to apologize for the remarks, and set the record straight.
The Pennsylvania Progressive has this: The Kane campaign not only questioned his military service but his fitness to pass the bar. Morrow told me the Minnesota test their opponent took to qualify for the bar was easier than Pennsylvania's and said Murphy took it for that reason. Morrow then attacked Murphy's claim to have prosecuted terrorists.
Also she denies being an executive of Kane is Able but signed FEC reports as an executive of Kane is Able. John concludes The Kane campaign lies. They cannot be trusted and the last thing we need is a liar as Attorney General. I demand a full public apology from Ms. Kane for lying about me.
Above Average Jane points out that Kane may be misrepresenting her credentials.
I googled a few key phrases, such as "specializes in child abuse law" and "specializes in elder abuse law." There were remarkably few results and most of those were not law firms but articles that use those terms.
So it was odd to see that Kathleen Kane, a Democratic candidate for Attorney General, uses that phrase on her campaign website:
As an Assistant District Attorney for Lackawanna County, Kathleen began in the child abuse/sexual assault unit spending several years prosecuting gruesome cases of physical and sexual abuse of children and adults. Simultaneous to the duties of this unit, Kathleen specialized in cases involving elder abuse, prosecuted white-collar criminals, and exposed abuses in Orphans’ Court.
The National Elder Law Foundation states that:
The National Elder Law Foundation is the only national organization certifying practitioners of elder and special needs law. NELF's Certified Elder Law Attorney designation is itself certified by the American Bar Association.
You can search for a certified lawyer by state. Kathleen Kane is not listed, not under Kane or Granahan, on the PA list.
This may be significant. It may not. In the law, as in many things, the devil is in the details. This seemed like a detail.
Then there is parking ticket story that I broke that got a lot of play on the WILK Sue Henry radio show but there may be more shenannigans going on with tickets in Scranton.
Magistrate Alyce Hailstone has also dismissed a bunch of tickets for 2 other Lackawanna County Assistant Attorneys. From Scranton Political Times Message Board
Assistant DA's Michael and Ellen Goffer also don't have to pay parking fines. Ellen Goffer is Kathleen Kane's sister.
The list for Ellen Goffer

Another Blogfest success

Matt Cartwright and Tom Shibula came after they were done with the meet and greet down the street from my house. Blogfest had been on the calendar since January so you guy's schedule an event to step on it 2 weeks out? Grrrr as Rusty would say. Tim Holden also had an event scheduled at the same time many miles away. Laureen Cummings is the Republican candidate in the 17thCD and made the rounds at Blogfest. My pal Jim O'Meara is her campaign manager.
.
JJ Murphy represented his brother Patrick who is running for Attorney General but was in Pittsburgh campaigning. Hey Nat you have to get your scheduling priorities straight. I was disapointed that Kathleen Kane or any surrogates didn't make it but that's no surprise as I have been told she hasn't been on the hustings as much as she should. After all the parking was free with no need to worry about getting a ticket.
.
Other politicos in the crowd included Bill Goldsworthy, Harry Haas, Bob Lampman, Bob Zaruta,Mike Szutack, Bob Caruso, Johm Lombardo and Casey Evans who recently got engaged. It was good to see both the Young Democrats and Young Republicans, they are our future leaders. I'm sure I left someone out and misspelled some names.
.
As the blogger report I will update NEPA Blogs
