Political gaffe edition
Our colorful Congressman Paul Kanjorski said some things in a town hall meeting in Ashley last August that has the usual suspects howling.
“I’ll tell you my impression. We really in this last election – when I say we, the Democrats – I think pushed it as far as we can, the envelope. Didn’t say it, but we implied it – that we, if we won the congressional elections, we could stop the war. Now anybody who is a good student of government would know that wasn’t true. But you know the temptation to want to win back the Congress, we sort of stretched the facts – and people ate it up.”
Kanjorski Town Meeting 9
I think it was an honest assessment of what happened but in politics if someone actually says something that is true the other side will jump all over them. That's why we all hate "lying politicians."
From a release: "I expressed my belief that some Democrats in 2006 overestimated the ability of a single house of Congress to end the war, particularly in the face of an intransigent president and Senate Republicans who are committed to continuing the war.”

Who is the moron saying we don't need Atomic bombs and George Bush commited high crimes. Good thing I was't there ! Barf fest 2008
Nice video find !
If the Dems had kept this promise, perhaps the Congressional approval rating would be a bit higher. The only thing that would have helped their image more would be if they had impeached the Current Officeholder - or at least investigated his administration's high crimes and misdemeanors with the same thoroughness that they have used in investigating Major League Baseball.
The lighting makes Nanticoke's Son look like one of the aliens from They Live.
All Congress needs to do to stop the war is to either vote to cut off the funding for the war. However, if they do this I can very well picture a large smear war about how Democrats don't support our troops.
The best way would to invoke the War Powers Act. Congress has the sole authority to declare war, not the president. Congress never voted to declare war, they only voted to authorize military force. Under the War Powers Act they can end the war if they decided to invoke it.
Sadly Reid and Pelosi turned out to be too spineless to actually stand up to the Republicans.
Barlette IGNORES the fact that his party got us into the war of lies in the first place, notice? And has no intention of getting us out of this biggest blunder in American history. He also doesn't mention that he cost Hazleton taxpayers over a million dollars on his illegal immigration ordinance, which all experts said would happen, but he did it anyway. AND...his deception, where it was exposed by the Citizen's Voice, that Santorum staffers started his illegal immigration website.
Like I said on my blog, I'm voting for the jackass I know! Not the jackass I don't know, the one-trick illegal immigration issue pony, with a track record of costing Hazleton taxpayers a million dollars on his "folly" to make a name for himself.
Sure, Kanjorski is a jackass. Barletta seems to be a BIGGER jackass to me! Maybe he'll vote to stop SCHIP and all the other unAmerican things the Republicans vote for.
Illegal immigration is repsonsible for the war. Illegal immigration is responsible for keeping us in the war. Yeesh..
I've said it before and I'll say it again: this is an absolutely perfect opportunity for a third-party candidate.
Oh Jedimaster...If Congress authorized military force then how can you call it anything but ?
The Dem congress was behind this 100%. Time has shown that they can't be trusted. Just a few years later they all claimed that they were lied to, when in fact they were telling the same story...so BS. You're sounding like Bill Clinton. He didn't have relations with that woman. Gulp Gulp Gulp...
Article II, Section 2 provides that "The president shall be Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States. This means the pres doesn't have to ask congress first. PERIOD.
Want to complain about something, complain about the do nothing Liberals in te Senate and House. They have had control for over 2 years now and haven't done anything. ZERO Well except increase spending and waste MORE money than the out of control Republicans they replaced.
Big Dan the "biggest blunder in American history" is not this war. We are winning. Did you hear the Great news on Friday ? Iraqi forces are leading the charge now. Yipeee...it's about time. Big blunders...how about not doing anything about the following future problems. Social security, energy and homeland security. These will hit us even harder. And those jerk politicians campain every year to do something about it and then ...nothing. Wait, Social security is GONE my new good freind. We'll be working until we're 75.
Bring on the 3rd party candidate Please ! I don't want to vote for McLame....but I will if I have to.
Nepa,
First off I do complain about them. Most of them turned out to be spineless and opportunists. Don't assume I fall behind all of the Democrats in Congress. There are a handful that I passionately support.
Congress authorized military force via a joint resolution. It was NOT a declaration of war.
You do quote the Constitution, however; the President does NOT have the authority to declare war.
"The Congress shall have Power:
To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water;"
That is Article One, Section Eight. Only Congress has the power to authorize war. What Congress did was vote to allow the President to use military action. The President has NO authority to declare war.
Since it is not a declaration of war, it violates the War Powers Act.
And for the record I do not like Bill Clinton.
And not all Dems were behind it. 21 Democratic senators voted against it, 22 if you include Jeffords.
126 Dems in the House voted against it. The majority of Democrats opposed the resolution.
I do strongly believe that the Dems who voted for it should apology for their error.
It is very dubious to claim that we are winning. We have made no real inroads and we are merely trapped in a religious civil war.
Congress approved Bush's decision to send troops into Iraq and they've supported that decision with money year after year after year.
It's just that congress lacks the political courage to call an invasion of Iraq what it really is. They would all rather sit back and Monday morning quarterback. Point fingers if it goes bad and take credit if it goes well. Don't want to loose any elections. Self serving politicians stink !
Bush "consulted" (war powers act)Congress and they've been giving him the cash ever since. So I'm calling it what it is. It's a declaration of war.
It is very dubious to claim that we are losing as well. I've been watching MANY positives on the news this weekend. When you cut through the sensationalism of doom and gloom, this ain't another Vietnam and it isn't a civil war. Nobody has been calling it that in like...um....forever.
bye bye...time to go cut the grass and water the garden.
It is a civil war. You have too opposing sides, Sunni and Shia fighting over control. That is a religious civil war.
You can call it whatever you want, but it doesn't mean it's so. Since it is not an "official" deceleration of war, it still is just an authorization. No real war was declared.
BTW Jedi sir....A comment on Most of them turned out to be spineless and opportunists.
I wuz just looking at your blog...Carney is a DINO ? Carney is exactly what he said he was..sorta. A Conservative Democrat. You got exactly what you asked for with him.
Civil War Shmivel war read the latest news. Al SadeR and his boys are finished and Iraqi forces are kicking their butts. Al isn't even in Iraq right now, hiding his sorry butt in Iran. They're piling up the bodies and taking their ammo. Syrians and Irianians have been showing up in the body count as well. It's starting to get better the for good guys.
Some good popcorn here today, I'll go and cook me another bag.
I have read the news regarding Iraq recently and it is the same trend. There are periods when the violence is not as bad, and this happens to be one of them. It will only be a matter of time until the pendulum swings again.
For the record I'm in the 11th, not the 10th so I really had nothing to do with Carney's election. A pumpkin would've been a nicer alternative to Sherwood. I do have the right to criticize Carney. In terms of ideology, there is substantial difference between him and a Republican.
THIS COULD HURT KANJO; OF COURSE, WE ALL SAY THAT WE WANT OUR POLITICIANS TO SPEAK HONESTLY, BUT STRANGELY ENOUGH, WHEN THEY DO THEY GET BURNED. PROBABLY THE MOST HONEST STATEMENT A PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE EVER SPOKE WAS WALTER MONDALE'S "REAGAN WILL RAISE YOUR TAXES, I WILL RAISE YOUR TAXES. HE WON'T TELL YOU ABOUT IT, I JUST DID." WE ALL KNOW HOW THAT TURNED OUT. AND, BY THE WAY, REAGAN DID RAISE TAXES AFTER HIS REELECTION. IN OTHER WORDS, WHAT INCENTIVE DOES A POLITICAN HAVE NOT TO LIE?
Of course we weren't going to leave the war. Nancy Pelosi's husband is a DEFENSE CONTRACTOR. Both sides make a lot of money and receive a lot of donations for this quagmire. Why should anyone change the course?
Everything I ever needed to know about politics was learned by watching 1980's professional wrestling.
