Mark's Pub has been sold

Mark's Pub on N. Washington St. in Wilkes-Barre has been the venue of choice of the Saturday OT Committee and Operatic Society  and Gort42 fans for many gathering over the years. We were all heartbroken when the owner and good friend Mark Rogers passed away at an early age.

Now it looks like Marks' family has found a buyer. The Liquor License application was hard to read but it's either Guri, LLC or Gurl, LLC. I need to check out the property transfers.

The Committee and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Nescopeck Pass wish the new owners every success and look forward to having a cocktail there soon.

Triple Crown

There only has been 11 horses that have won the Triple Crown and just 21 who won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness but lost in the Belmont Stakes. There were 3 that took the prize in the 1970's, Secretariat 1973, Seattle Slew 1977 and Affirmed 1978 and before that the last triple crown winner was Citation in 1948. Many bar patrons in the country will be pulling for I'll Have Another to make history this Saturday. We like the name.

Speaking of bars.

The Saturday OT Committee and Operatic Society will gather to watch the Belmont Stakes at the usual place this  Saturday, 5PM at Marks Pub 1287 N Washington St, Wilkes-Barre.

This may be the first  true OT Committee meeting in a long time as it looks like all the original members will actually be working on Saturday.

Of course this is an inclusive event as we welcome all friends, readers,  commenters, bloggers, Facebook friends, politicians, clergymen, vegetarians, veterinarians,  pastafarians, welders, masons, mechanics and anybody else to join us.

This pic of Rapid Edward and Barbaro (close but no cigar) is our unofficial image of horse racing :

Update: I'll Have Another has bee scratched because of a sore leg but we will still be gathering to infuse cash into the malt beverage industry.

Another Blogfest success

The outgrowth of the Saturday OT Committee and Operatic Society scored another feather in the cap with the 5th iteration of Blogfest at Rooney's in Pittston last night. About 200 people came and went throughout the evening who adhered to the spirit of the event. Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians and Pastafarians agreed to disagree but nobody was disagreeable and everybody wore clothes.

.

11th CD Democratic candidate Gene Stilp added some fun to the evening by inflating one of his pink pigs outside Rooney's. The police stopped by to check it out because somebody called 911, the cops laughed it off.

.

Stilp showed up with a posse of supporters and talked my ear off. I asked why he was running for Congress when most of us that pay attention associate him with state issues. He refuted that saying the issues he brings up matter not only to the state but the country. I also found that we have a mutual friend, my gatekeeper Dot. Primary opponent Bill Vinsko worked the room and the Barletta campaign was represented by CM Lance Strange who has great sense of humor and a thick skin like his boss.

.

It was great to see State Rep Gerald Mullery and his opponent Rick Arnold have a nice chat.

.

Young Republican Aaron Kaufer is running in the 120th HD. Regular commenter Forrest seemed to be persuaded by him.
.

Matt Cartwright and Tom Shibula came after they were done with the meet and greet down the street from my house. Blogfest had been on the calendar since January so you guy's schedule an event to step on it 2 weeks out? Grrrr as Rusty would say. Tim Holden also had an event scheduled at the same time many miles away. Laureen Cummings is the Republican candidate in the 17thCD and made the rounds at Blogfest. My pal Jim O'Meara is her campaign manager.

.

JJ Murphy represented his brother Patrick who is running for Attorney General but was in Pittsburgh campaigning. Hey Nat you have to get your scheduling priorities straight. I was disapointed that Kathleen Kane or any surrogates didn't make it but that's no surprise as I have been told she hasn't been on the hustings as much as she should. After all the parking was free with no need to worry about getting a ticket.

.

Other politicos in the crowd included Bill Goldsworthy, Harry Haas, Bob Lampman, Bob Zaruta,Mike Szutack, Bob Caruso, Johm Lombardo and Casey Evans who recently got engaged. It was good to see both the Young Democrats and Young Republicans, they are our future leaders. I'm sure I left someone out and misspelled some names.
.

As the blogger report I will update NEPA Blogs

Planning Blogfest

!I've been busy working my Facebook contacts and sending out emails to various candidates and other political types inviting them to the 5th Blogfest so I haven't been able to be too snarky about some comments from PA politicians that caught my eye.

Talking about the new voter ID law Governor Tom Corbett said “When some of the precincts come in with a 112 percent reporting you have to scratch your head and say how does that happen?” I watch elections closely and I have never heard of such a thing.

From Steve Bennen: But here's the trouble: there are no examples of Pennsylvania precincts, at a time or in an election, coming in with 112% participation. Corbett appears to have simply made this up.

He was Attorney General before becoming Governor so if he found such evidence of voter fraud you would think he would have investigated it. Maybe he just closed his eyes.

Anyway, I'm getting off topic and need to go call it a night soon.

A few years ago I was talking with Joe V of Pittston Politics about doing a political event and we both agreed that we didn't want to do the usual candidates forum. The LWV and some media outlets already did that and we wanted to do something different. I suggested we rent a fire hall or something and have a kind of political carnival then he came up the idea of having an informal cocktail party and suggested we do it at his pal's bar in Pittston. I had been doing informal get togethers of local bloggers at other watering holes and it clicked. So Blogfest was born although it took a bit to settle on a name for the event.

It was a hit right from the start and Vito put it best "You should do this more often! It was probably the most stress-free 'political' event I have ever been to. It was so refreshing to meet people from all parties and discuss issues at such a casual affair. In addition to typical politics, I had the opportunity to engage in conversations about gas drilling, home rule, college football, and how my three boys believe it is their Constitutional right to maintain a messy bedroom. Great job Gort!

The last time around we had just about every candidate for Luzerne County candidate for Judge, the county council and many municipal offices. Before that state rep and congressional candidates made an appearance. I don't want to list everyone who has attended because I'm sure I will omit someone.

This time around Michelle and DB are working on getting many NEPA Bloggers to attend who may or may not be interested in politics.

The beauty of Blogfest is a few simple rules. No speeches from any politician or anyone else, agree to disagree without being disagreeable. The dress code is basic you must wear clothes even it is warm. If Rick Santorum shows up I will wear a brown sweatervest.

Blogger Meet-up

via Michelle

....announce the upcoming NEPA Blogger Meet-up. This event will be actually focused around the bloggers…what a novel thought!

We are inviting the usual political suspects, but don't think that many of them will be showing up because of the close proximity to election day. I'm sure that they will be busy vying for last minute votes.

Here are the dirty deets about the event:

The Who/What:
NEPABlogs.org will be hosting an informal Blogger Meet-up. Come out and meet the NEPA Blogs (dysfunctional) family. ALL ARE WELCOME. There is no admission or cover charge. It is absolutely 100% free. You have to buy your own drinks though. Unless you serenade me with an off key version of Lady Gaga or something like that.

The When: Sun Nov. 6, 2011 starting at 5pm. Stay until the cows come home….or last call. Whichever comes first.

The Where: The Metro Bar & Grill in Dallas. For directions to the Metro Bar and Grille, please visit:
http://www.themetrobarandgrill.com/

***More details here:
http://nepablogs.blogspot.com/2011/10/blogger-meet-up.html – We put the "fun" in dysfunctional.

I hope you can stop by and partake in some libations with cool kiddies.

The Saturday OT Commitee and Operatic Society will also be attending to infuse cash into the malt beverage industry to insure it's liquidity. This a gathering of bloggers, readers, political types, friends and anyone else that is interested. All are welcome. A quick check of the agenda reveals that there isn't one. Michael Rennie, the unofficial Social Secretary of the Northeast Blogging Council has announced that his organization has sanctioned the event saying "It's a good excuse to drink beer."

The Metro was recently purchased by my Attorney, Lazlo. He helped me out a few years ago when some scumbag tried to extort money from me for publishing a few pictures of then Congressman Don "the Tunkhannock Strangler" Sherwood's girlfriend Cynthia Ore that he had put out on the web as bait then falsley claimed to have a copyright. Tom shot him down proving he was full of shit doing me a great service and didn't even send me a bill. For that I will be forever grateful. If you need a business attorney consider hiring Smithford.

Did somebody say Lady Gaga

LOS ANGELES — Lady Gaga enjoyed her "first real Marilyn moment" with former President Bill Clinton.

Blogfest tonight

The next blogger meetup will be Friday September 23rd at Rooney's Irish Pub 67 S. Main St. Pittston, PA 18704 starting at 6PM.

Our political bloggers from Luzerne and Lackawanna counties will be there along with our readers, commenter's and people who are just interested in local politics. We should also have many candidates and their supporters.

We are looking at good turnout.

Blogfest-2011 fall edition this Friday

The next blogger meetup will be Friday September 23rd at Rooney's Irish Pub 67 S. Main St. Pittston, PA 18704 starting at 6PM.

Our political bloggers from Luzerne and Lackawanna counties will be there along with our readers, commenter's and people who are just interested in local politics. We should also have many candidates and their supporters.

You don't have to blog about about politics to attend as we welcome everyone who blogs.
There is no charge for admission.

The turnout should be as good as the last 3 times. We realize that some of our regulars may not make it because they are still dealing with flood damage that is consuming both their time and money. We did consider rescheduling the event because of it but there is always something else going on. In the spring it was the 3rd District Ziti Dinner. Whatever date we pick there are conflicts and objections. We were gong to do next Friday but that is Rosh Hashanah. In October just about every day has a candidate event.

You can RSVP at our Facebook event page or drop me an email at gort42@yahoo.com with any questions.

Our good friend Joe Valenti of PittstonPolitics.com got clobbered by the flood but will take a break from cleaning up to attend.

Blogfest-2011 fall edition

It was so much fun the last 3 times we are going to do it again.

If you're listed on NEPA Blogs this is the place to be.

The promotion of this event is a bit behind schedule because of the flooding that has impacted just about everybody involved but there should be a good turnout. I'll do my best to get the word out and expect my blog buddies to do the same.

There are 3 rules to the event.

1. No Speeches

2. You must wear clothes even it is warm.

3. Agree to disagree but don't be disagreeable.

There is no charge for admission.

Kentucky Derby

The 14th annual get together of the Saturday OT Committee and Operatic Society to watch the Kentucky Derby is scheduled for Saturday, May 7th 4PM at Marks Pub 1287 N Washington St, Wilkes-Barre.

None of us are big horse race fans but this is just another excuse to infuse cash into the malt beverage industry to ensure it's liquidity. After all, we don't want D.G. Yuengling & Son to go the way of General Motors.

This is not a mega-meetup like the one last month a Rooney's (we will do that again in the fall) and it has not been sanctioned by the Northeast Blogging Council. But of course everyone is welcome.

Blogfest 2011-Spring Edition

I wasn't involved in the planning and promotion of our 3rd gathering at Rooney's Irish Pub in Pittston but as soon as I walked in the door I realized how much I miss blogging. There are many people of all parties that I now call friend because of this Internet venture. I came up with the idea of having a low key gathering of politicians/bloggers/activists and helped organize the first 2 meetups that were great successes and even got some coverage from the local papers. Kudos to David and Joe for keeping it going. I noticed that many of our local political bloggers didn't make it this time but there were plenty of candidates running for various offices.

We got there around 7PM and missed the first wave of judicial candidates who were off to the 3rd district meeting, like committee endorsements matter anymore, but you have to make the rounds. I'm not going to run down of list of people that were there but if you are interested the Yonk took attendance. Keeping in the spirit the people who attended agreed to disagree without being disagreeable, there were no speeches and the dress code was adhered to. I will be more active for the Fall Edition.

Plus I got to d to my button and political paraphernalia collection.

Blogger/Candidate Meetup September 17th postgame

The picture above is from Another Monkey who raised the question on what to call this semi-annual event. I probably created some confusion by posting it as a Blogger/Candidate Meetup on the blog but created a Facebook event page titled Happy Hour-Fall Edition then sent out a promo email refering to it as the Mega-Meetup. Joe Valenti tagged it Blogfest which appeared on the sign outside Rooney's. Beer Summit was suggested by the Blogfather who was MIA and many people were asking about him.
.

We had another great turnout and expect the spring event to be the best one yet when all the local offices are on the primary ballot. National and state elections are not as nearly intense as the local ones and primaries have all the activists more fired up than the general election.

Gene Rooney and his staff did an outstanding job like they always do taking care of our need for beverages and really good food.
.

Me and Mrs. G got there early and the first one in the door was 117th State Rep Candidate Richard Shermanski and Bob Caruso. This was real treat for me because I haven't seen Bob since we both worked for different candidates in the 1976 Presidential primary then organized a Young Democrats chapter in Luzerne County with a lot of help from State Senator Marty Murray. We shared some great memories like the time Jimmy Carter came to town and we lost Kevin Blaum in Mountaintop and the future Mayor of Boston, Tommy Menino, didn't know what a CMP was.
.

Luzerne County Commissioner and PA Senate 14th District hopeful Steve Urban worked the crowd all night as did the Libertarian candidate Betsy Summers. Lackawanna PA 20th Senate District Republican nominee Frank Scavo was there with his lovely wife and he didn't get into a shouting match with Bart Simpson. Another Lackawanna county candidate was Republican Theresa Kane who is running against longtime State Rep Ed Staback in the 115th. She was accompanied by Scranton Tea Party activist Lauree Cummings.
.

My 3rd favorite Congressman Paul Kanjorski showed up with a posse that included Joe Terrana, his COS Karen Feather and Nicole Giambusso and stayed well into the night. For some reason they all wanted to know how I learned to speak Polish. Lou Barletta didn't make it but his press guy Shawn Kelly made the rounds. Él estaba muy emocionado cuando le dije que si el alcalde Lou gane las elecciones voy a empezar a referirse a él como el congresista Nelligan.

118th Republican candidate Terrance O'Conner walked in the door dressed up in his 18th century garb but I didn't get a picture before he changed. He said he lost his bullhorn

I asked State Senator Lisa Baker what she thought her margin of victory would be and we recounted the 2006 race when Dave Madeira and Russ Bigus got in to that argument over who had killed the most animals. She confided that she ran into a deer around that time that totaled her car and was going to put out a satirical press release saying she was the only candidate that got a deer that year but demurred.

Hoping to win the 119th Rick Arnold (R) and Gerald Mullery (D) mixed it up with the crowd. 121st Republican candidate James O'Meara is a great guy and I just recently learned that he married a girl that I had a crush on in high school. Small world.

From the courthouse Solicitor Vito DeLuca made it as did Controller Walter "the hump" Griffith. I think Mary Jo was blushing when the wags were busting on him.

All 3 120th State Rep candidates attended like they always do for my events, thank you. In this cycle I have had the most contact with them and I'm sort of like the Will Rogers of the local blogosphere since I have got to know and like all of them. Whoever wins the district will be well represented. West Pittston Mayor Bill Goldsworthy (R) tells me he is good shape and is keeping an eye for yard signs for Tim Mullen in Democratic areas. My 1st or 4th favorite State Represenative Phyllis Mundy (D) has an energetic young staff including Omeed Firouzi who is running the show and is still in high school! Omeed, when I was your age I could only dream of such things. After I got some experience I was instrumental in sinking more than one candidate's aspirations when they were dumb enough to make me the campaign manager or field director. The difference is you have a great candidate and I never did. Libertarian Tim Mullen continues to impress me. The number of signatures on his petitions and actualy being able to open an office is impressive for a 3rd party candidate. He brought some his supporters including the head honcho of the local Libertarians, Lou Jassikoff, who sends out a great email everyday.

Speaking of third parties the Greens didn't show up but Renee was flying the banner of the Pirate Party, arrgh.

Radio personality Dr. David Madeira brought his "oldest daughter" and other radio guys in attendance were Duke from Dallas and Bible Buck. The mad drummer and special Gort42 correspondent Austin Smith jones Ford deSoto was in the crowd and talked policy with Harry Haas. My pals David Baloga and Zen always light up a room. I finally got to meet Luzerne County elections honcho Lenny Piazza and thanked him for all the help he has given me over the years.

A couple of our local bloggers that concentrate on national issues should write up this event. But as I told Kanjo the beauty of blogging is that you don't have an editor or a deadline although Mrs. G and Renita are pretty good editors and I welcome all the help I can get.

Big Dan's site moves so fast I can't keep up. He looks taller on the internet. It was great to meet Mrs BD who does great work with the Fresh Air Fund . Chris NovoRockey used to post about local stuff but has gone full tilt to the dark side on national issues. Just remember that Colbert married his hand.

People kept asking me before and during the gathering what are the rules for the event.

There are 3 rules.

1. No Speeches

2. You must wear clothes even it is warm.

3. Agree to disagree but don't be a disagreeable.

One of my favorite moments from this night is when Chris Hackett and Dan Mueser shook hands and spent a few minutes chatting. I'm sure you remember that they had a knock down drag out primary in 2008. Dan gave me some credit for driving that race and he said he wanted to get together during it but his press guy kept jerking me around.
Vito said it best:

"You should do this more often!

Maybe we should call this event The Rodney King Get Together.

Happy Hour today

The next blogger/candidate meetup will be tonight at Rooney's Irish Pub 67 S. Main St. Pittston, PA 18704 starting at 5PM. There is big bar area with tables off to the side and plenty of free parking across the street where the Tomato Festival is held.

It looks like we will have another good turnout. Just about every PA State Senate and State House candidate and/or supporters in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties will be attending. That includes Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians and Pastafarians. We will have at least 2 members of the 111th United States Congress as our special guests along with a few people who want to replace them and representatives from the statewide campaigns. I have some definite maybes from the hopefuls themselves.

Our political bloggers from Luzerne and Lackawanna counties will be there along with our readers, commenters and people who are just interested in local politics. The public is invited.

This is an informal mixer with no speeches scheduled. There is no charge for admission.

This event is sanctioned by the Northeast Blogging Council and the Saturday OT Committee and Operatic Society.

Our last mega meetup was a huge success that got some great local press coverage.

Candidates meet the faces behind the screen names

The great thing about an event like this is that we can talk politics and agree to disagree without being disagreeable.

Blogger/Candidate Meetup September 17th

It was so much fun last time we are going to do it again.

Candidates meet the faces behind the screen names

The next blogger meetup will be Friday September 17th at Rooney's Irish Pub 67 S. Main St. Pittston, PA 18704 starting at 5PM. There is big bar area with tables off to the side and plenty of free parking across the street where the Tomato Festival is held. It's easy to find just drive north on River Street from W-B and it's on the left. Or south from Scranton and it's on the right.

It looks like we will have a good turnout. So far I have received confirmation from about 25 campaigns for Congress, State Senate and State House that the candidate and/or supporters will be attending. That includes Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians and Pastafarians. The statewide candidates have been invited along with office holders not up for election this year and people interested in running for local offices in 2011. Some national figures have been invited and you never know who just might make it. Last time over 150 people showed up.

Our political bloggers from Luzerne and Lackawanna counties will be there along with our readers, commenters and people who are just interested in local politics.

This is an informal mixer with no speeches scheduled. There is no charge for admission.

This event is sanctioned by the Northeast Blogging Council and the Saturday OT Committee and Operatic Society.

A Beer Summit

The Blogfather has sent out the call to the local Blogosphere to meet this Saturday at a local corner bar in Wilkes-Barre to solve all the worlds problems.

... at or before 6 pm on Saturday, I will be taking up residence at the Leisure Tavern right here in the Nord End.

It has a large enough bar, plenty of ESPN, a side room, a pool table and a jukebox. And have no fear, a few members of the WBPD usually take up a bar stool at the conclusion of the 2-10 shift. Well, have no fear unless you have outstanding warrants.

Leisure Tavern

Wilkes Barre, PA

I haven't been in the place in years so it will be good to prowl around the old neighborhood. We can also plan our next mega-meetup involving bloggers and politicians before the fall election. The last one was a runaway success.
.

We are awaiting a ruling from Pope George Ringo to sanction this event as an official gathering of the Saturday OT Committee and Operatic Society.
