Ted Kennedy

The networks are reporting that he had some sort of seizure but not a stroke that was originally feared.
.
I met the Liberal Lion about 20 years ago when I was on vacation on Nantucket Island. A bunch of us were in a bar when Ted a few other people walked through the door and sat down at the table next to us. I know it's hard to believe that both me me and Ted could be found in a drinking establishment.
.
One of my friends spotted him and got all excited and wanted to go over to him which we all counseled against but Jack couldn't be persuaded to let the man just enjoy his evening. So he goes over to his table and starts babbling some thing like Senator Kennedy, Senator Kennedy I think you should be President, I'm from New Hampshire but I would vote for you anytime and some other stuff. Ted was a little taken aback with that sycophantic verbal assault. With a surprised and annoyed look on his face he said "Get the fuck away from me kid." The rest of us watching this exchange erupted in laughter and a round of applause. Jack came back to the table with his tail between his legs and sulked for a while.
.
Later in the evening Ted came over to us and slapped Jack on the back and apologized for being so short with him. He sat down with us and bought a round and we discussed sailing, a little politics and few other things.
.
An Update from Coal Region Voice who has first hand knowledge of cancer:
Doctors for the Massachusetts Democrat say tests conducted after Kennedy suffered a seizure this weekend show a tumor in his left parietal lobe. Preliminary results from a biopsy of the brain identified the cause of the seizure as a malignant glioma, they said.
.
A personal note. My father died from brain cancer so I hope some people will resist the temptation to make tasteless Chappaquiddick jokes at this time and wish Ted and his family well.

Ted Kennedy 1932-2009

This is a repost of what I wrote about my meeting with Ted after it was announced that he was ill.

Hillary claims victory in Florida

Never mind the fact that there are no delegates at stake and all the candidates agreed to skip the state because they violated the party rules. I just saw on TV that she is in FLA to give a victory speech in a meaningless election after agreeing to skip the state.
.
After the thumping she took in South Carolina she needs to point to some sort of victory, even a Pyrrhic one. Such bullshit doesn't sit well with me. You can't change the rules to suit your needs.
.
Ted and Caroline Kennedy's endorsement of Barrack Obama yesterday was really a rejection of the politics of the past from a political family of the past that looks to the future. My Republican friends will respond by making some sort of Chappaquiddick joke but the Kennedy's still matter. Ted is the Liberal Lion that will help with labor, lefty's and older folks that were inspired by President JFK. Teddy can still rally the faithful because the dream will never die.
.
The good thing about the impending regime change that will happen less than a year from now is we will have a President that can speak the English language, no matter who wins the election.
.
And this guy can speak the King's English. Obama's victory speech in SC:

For all his health problems Senator Ted Kennedy will not be denied a spot in this historic event.

All I can say about Michelle Obama's speech is WOW !

Another edition of Queer eye for the blog guy

Recent links to Gort42 include Columbia Blue and Alex Urevick-Ackelsberg's blog that wants Al Gore to run for President. I agree with Alex that Gore would be our best candidate. I'm in the anybody but Hillary camp right now although I would vote for her in the general election. The only Republican that I like is John McCain which is why he won't get the nomination.

Some of our local bloggers have been quiet:

Some tell me that they will be back.

But the big news today is that Dr Rick is back. He will entertain us with tales why Liberals are evil, Fox News is the truth and rehash Ted Kennedy jokes about driving and swimming.

And NEPA Blogs has been updated.

Pennsylvania 10th CD debates set

On March 17, 2008, the Susquehanna University College Republicans will host the 10th Congressional District Debate between candidates Chris Hackett and Dan Meuser. The debate will be moderated by a representative from WKOK, the Daily Item, and the SU College Republicans. The debate will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Isaacs Auditorium located in Seibert Hall.

Other scheduled debates are:

March 26 at 7 p.m., Tunkhannock Area Middle School, Wyoming County.

April 15 at 8 p.m., WVIA-TV, Jenkins Township.

New radio ads.

Hackett has been running an ad the last few days attacking Chris Carney's fundraiser with Charlie Rangel and inviting people to Grotto Pizza tonight for free. The tag line is amusing "and it won't cost you 5 thousand bucks either."

Meuser's ad has Rick Santorum on what sounds like a cell phone endorsing him. When my dog heard Santorum's voice he ran and hid behind the couch.

Also, they each have new TV spots up.

Hackett's new spot is called "Best" and features a picture of Hillary Clinton with voice over using liberal as a pejorative. Jennifer found this a little odd. "Why is there a picture of Hillary Clinton there?" Last time I checked, Hackett wasn't running for president and Clinton wasn't running for a congressional seat in PA.

It seems that Hillary has replaced Ted Kennedy as the favorite Republican boogeyman.

The Meuser campaign new entry is "Reagan & The Pledge" . There must be a rule that says any Republican running for office has to invoke the memory of Saint Ronny. It has the usual shots of him walking through Pride claiming he has the knowledge to create "good paying jobs." It closes with him saying he signed the pledge never to vote for a tax increase. Why raise taxes to pay for a war or rebuild a major city wiped out in a hurricane when you can borrow the money from China?

I notice that Meuser's Securing Our Borders ad has stopped airing and the PA Democratic Party weighs in with this bit of mischief:

WILL LOU BARLETTA RESCIND HIS ENDORSEMENT OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT EMPLOYER DAN MEUSER?

HARRISBURG: On Friday, March 14, the Scranton Times reported that the Republican candidate for Congress, Dan Meuser’s company had hired multiple illegal immigrants and was fined $23,000 for having broken the law.

This news came out just days after he aired a misleading and hypocritical television ad touting a strong positing on immigration. In January, Lou Barletta announced his endorsement of Dan Meuser stating “Dan Meuser will fight to secure our borders, and will oppose any and all attempts at amnesty” [release, 1/10/08].

“Will Lou Barletta rescind his endorsement of illegal immigrant employer Dan Mesuer or will he flip flop on the one issue he says matters the most to Americans?” asked Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chairman T.J. Rooney. “This is the true test, if Lou Barletta refuses to renounce his support of Dan Mesuer, how can we trust anything he says?

“Perhaps Lou Barletta believes the he and his friends are above the law.”

The Independent, Conservative, Common Sense Oasis points out:

From President Nixon to Congressman Sherwood the lesson that no one in politics ever seems to learn is — that the cover-up is worse than either an actual or perceived scandal. Right now the perception is that Dan Meuser, while not actively covering it up, hoped that no one would have learned about this — which again reeks of amateurism.

If you are going to claim the mantle of immigration enforcer, common sense would have told you this was going to come out.

Who is advising Mr. Meuser? Dan, whoever it is — fire them.

Santorum endorses Romney

Former Senator Rick Santorum has endorsed Mitt Romney in the Feb. 12th Virginia Republican primary. No surprise since Ricky has been trashing his former buddy who campaigned for him in his losing race in 2006. That's gratitude.

"I served 12 years with him, six years in the Senate as one of the leaders of the Senate, trying to put together the conservative agenda, and almost at every turn, on domestic policy, John McCain was not only against us, but leading the charge on the other side"

He goes further on Hugh Hewitt's show, saying that McCain won't win the GOP base and was on the wrong side of the immigration issue.

"John McCain was the guy who was working with Ted Kennedy to drive it down our throats, and lectured us repeatedly about how xenophobic we were, lectured us, us being the Republican conference, about how wrong we were on this, how we were on the wrong side of history."

Lance also tells us that former Montgomery County Commissioner, Tom Ellis, has entered the race for Pennsylvania State Treasurer.

Sherwood spending big bucks

A little back rub, some playful choking, the cops get involved then a lawsuit. Before you know it Don Sherwood's negatives are so high he has to start spending some of the megabucks he has collected from every special interest in sight. And this is in a primary against a little known opponent.

Is Don Sherwood running scared?

The four-term congressman -considered vulnerable since he settled a $5.5 million battery suit filed by his former mistress -has spent more than $350,000 in the past seven months to wage a primary campaign against his little-known and underfunded challenger, Kathy Scott.
Even Sherwood's campaign manager is using the "s-word." "When we run a campaign, we run it two ways, unopposed or scared," Jerry Morgan said in a phone interview Friday. But he added he expects Sherwood to prevail in the Republican primary on May 16.

Since October, Sherwood's campaign committee has spent more than twice what it expended during the same period in the last election cycle, when he faced no GOP opposition.
Sherwood spent $206,000 in April alone, according to Federal Election Commission data, including more than $160,000 on radio ads and a series of glossy brochures mailed to Republican voters. Some of the brochures question Scott's party loyalty, noting she changed her party affiliation from Democrat to Republican just before the filing deadline for the primary.

I liked one of the direct mail pieces that has a picture of Kathy Scott under Republican bogeymen Ted Kennedy and Howard Dean. The radio ads I've heard claim he knows how to bring home the bacon. According to Cynthia Ore he does know a lot about pork.

POTUS picks a fight with Dream Act Lite

The DREAM Act  is a common sense proposal to give kids that were brought into the United States by their illegal immigrant parents  a path to legal status by going to college or serving in the military. Before the the Republican Party went all Tea Party Nutso it was supported by many GOP lawmakers including Senators Orin Hatch, John McCain and Richard Lugar.

Today President Obama announced that  the U.S. will stop deporting some illegal immigrants who came here as children.

The usual suspects are howling including some jerk that heckled the President when he was speaking in the Rose Garden. He will probably become a hero to the right wing bloggers and Fox News  like the asshole who yelled "you lie" during the State of the Union a few years ago.   Imagine if that had happened to the last occupant of the White House.

REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT
ON IMMIGRATION

Rose Garden

2:09 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT:  Good afternoon, everybody.  This morning, Secretary Napolitano announced new actions my administration will take to mend our nation’s immigration policy, to make it more fair, more efficient, and more just -- specifically for certain young people sometimes called “Dreamers.”

These are young people who study in our schools, they play in our neighborhoods, they’re friends with our kids, they pledge allegiance to our flag.  They are Americans in their heart, in their minds, in every single way but one:  on paper.  They were brought to this country by their parents -- sometimes even as infants -- and often have no idea that they’re undocumented until they apply for a job or a driver’s license, or a college scholarship.

Put yourself in their shoes.  Imagine you’ve done everything right your entire life -- studied hard, worked hard, maybe even graduated at the top of your class -- only to suddenly face the threat of deportation to a country that you know nothing about, with a language that you may not even speak.

That’s what gave rise to the DREAM Act.  It says that if your parents brought you here as a child, if you’ve been here for five years, and you’re willing to go to college or serve in our military, you can one day earn your citizenship.  And I have said time and time and time again to Congress that, send me the DREAM Act, put it on my desk, and I will sign it right away.

Now, both parties wrote this legislation.  And a year and a half ago, Democrats passed the DREAM Act in the House, but Republicans walked away from it.  It got 55 votes in the Senate, but Republicans blocked it.  The bill hasn’t really changed.  The need hasn’t changed.  It’s still the right thing to do.  The only thing that has changed, apparently, was the politics.

As I said in my speech on the economy yesterday, it makes no sense to expel talented young people, who, for all intents and purposes, are Americans -- they’ve been raised as Americans; understand themselves to be part of this country -- to expel these young people who want to staff our labs, or start new businesses, or defend our country simply because of the actions of their parents -- or because of the inaction of politicians.

In the absence of any immigration action from Congress to fix our broken immigration system, what we’ve tried to do is focus our immigration enforcement resources in the right places.  So we prioritized border security, putting more boots on the southern border than at any time in our history -- today, there are fewer illegal crossings than at any time in the past 40 years.  We focused and used discretion about whom to prosecute, focusing on criminals who endanger our communities rather than students who are earning their education.  And today, deportation of criminals is up 80 percent.  We've improved on that discretion carefully and thoughtfully.  Well, today, we're improving it again.

Effective immediately, the Department of Homeland Security is taking steps to lift the shadow of deportation from these young people.  Over the next few months, eligible individuals who do not present a risk to national security or public safety will be able to request temporary relief from deportation proceedings and apply for work authorization.

Now, let's be clear -- this is not amnesty, this is not immunity.  This is not a path to citizenship.  It's not a permanent fix.  This is a temporary stopgap measure that lets us focus our resources wisely while giving a degree of relief and hope to talented, driven, patriotic young people.  It is --

Q    (Inaudible.)

THE PRESIDENT:  -- the right thing to do.

Q    -- foreigners over American workers.

THE PRESIDENT:  Excuse me, sir.  It's not time for questions, sir.

Q    No, you have to take questions.

THE PRESIDENT:  Not while I'm speaking.

Precisely because this is temporary, Congress needs to act.  There is still time for Congress to pass the DREAM Act this year, because these kids deserve to plan their lives in more than two-year increments.  And we still need to pass comprehensive immigration reform that addresses our 21st century economic and security needs -- reform that gives our farmers and ranchers certainty about the workers that they'll have.  Reform that gives our science and technology sectors certainty that the young people who come here to earn their PhDs won't be forced to leave and start new businesses in other countries.  Reform that continues to improve our border security, and lives up to our heritage as a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants.

Just six years ago, the unlikely trio of John McCain, Ted Kennedy and President Bush came together to champion this kind of reform.  And I was proud to join 23 Republicans in voting for it.  So there’s no reason that we can’t come together and get this done.

And as long as I’m President, I will not give up on this issue, not only because it’s the right thing to do for our economy -- and CEOs agree with me -- not just because it’s the right thing to do for our security, but because it’s the right thing to do, period.  And I believe that, eventually, enough Republicans in Congress will come around to that view as well.

And I believe that it’s the right thing to do because I’ve been with groups of young people who work so hard and speak with so much heart about what’s best in America, even though I knew some of them must have lived under the fear of deportation.  I know some have come forward, at great risks to themselves and their futures, in hopes it would spur the rest of us to live up to our own most cherished values.  And I’ve seen the stories of Americans in schools and churches and communities across the country who stood up for them and rallied behind them, and pushed us to give them a better path and freedom from fear --because we are a better nation than one that expels innocent young kids.

And the answer to your question, sir -- and the next time I’d prefer you let me finish my statements before you ask that question -- is this is the right thing to do for the American people --

Q    (Inaudible.)

THE PRESIDENT:  I didn’t ask for an argument.  I’m answering your question.

Q    I'd like to --

THE PRESIDENT:  It is the right thing to do --

Q    (Inaudible.)

THE PRESIDENT:  -- for the American people.  And here’s why --

Q    -- unemployment --

THE PRESIDENT:  Here’s the reason:  because these young people are going to make extraordinary contributions, and are already making contributions to our society.

I’ve got a young person who is serving in our military, protecting us and our freedom.  The notion that in some ways we would treat them as expendable makes no sense.  If there is a young person here who has grown up here and wants to contribute to this society, wants to maybe start a business that will create jobs for other folks who are looking for work, that’s the right thing to do.  Giving certainty to our farmers and our ranchers; making sure that in addition to border security, we’re creating a comprehensive framework for legal immigration -- these are all the right things to do.

We have always drawn strength from being a nation of immigrants, as well as a nation of laws, and that’s going to continue.  And my hope is that Congress recognizes that and gets behind this effort.

All right.  Thank you very much.

Q    What about American workers who are unemployed while you import foreigners?

                     END                                               2:17 P.M. EDT
Congressman Lou Barletta had this response:
