One debate in the PA 11th CD

There will be one debate between incumbent Democratic Congressman Paul Kanjorski and Republican challenger Hazleton Mayor Lou Barletta October 29, on WVIA-TV.

The Barletta camp wanted at least 5 meetings but Kanjo won't agree to that and they are fuming.

"Mr. Kanjorski is either afraid to debate Lou Barletta face-to-face or he knows his record is simply indefensible and he would rather hide than face voters in northeastern Pennsylvania," said. Barletta campaign manager Vince Galko. "In either case, it clearly shows that Paul Kanjorski does not deserve another term representing the great people of the 11th Congressional District."

Kanjorski spokesman Ed Mitchell said the busy congressional schedule at the end of the session will not allow time for any other debates. But with this one, the editorial board interviews, and individual meetings where constituents can meet with the Congressman and ask any questions they have, the voters will know by Election Day where each candidate stands.

“The Congressman has a job to do in September in the capital and he’s going to continue to fully represent the people of the 11th, despite the time demands of the campaign. We simply have too many commitments in October after Congress adjourns to fit in any other debates,” Mitchell said.

A half would be enough for Lou to make his point on immigration.

PJ,

So how long has Kanjorski been home from his dismall vote to leave Washington and not deal with the energy crisis? August 1st was the vote. According to the House the "Summer District Work Period" was suppose to start August 11th not August 1st-http://www.house.gov/house/House_Calendar.shtml

That means he has 10 extra days in his district. And he can't have one debate during that period. Pure nonsense.

Ede Mitchell is keeping Paul Kanjorski under wraps. He is afraid of what is going to come out of his mouth next.

I'd like to see a few debates. But 5? When the Democratic presidential field was full, it seemed like they had one every other night. It was just too much.
And it's not like these are going to be Lincoln-Douglas debates either....

Somebody ought to teach Ed Mitchell to spell, too...he'll be in the "Capital"? Will that be the Capital A, the Capital B, or the Capital K (for Kanjo)? Jeez....

Incidentally, I have it on good authority that Mr. Kanjo is finding time to make controlled and orchestrated stops at various busineses talking to captive audiences of employees during their workdays.

These stops are "in his capacity as a Congressman", and he won't take questions about his campaign, but I will guarantee they will be pure Bush-bashing sessions, like all of his "town meetings" and "official" mail pieces that are not even thinly veiled shams for his campaign.

Ed Mitchell cracks me up. Would someone remind him that George Bush will not be president next year.

He tries to tie Barletta yet on the State of Pennsylvania in January last Kanjorski states Barletta isn't in sync with his president nor his party. So Ed which way is it? Your way or your canididates way because you can't have it both ways.

Barletta extended an invitation to McCain to tour Hazleton. He didn't come. George Bush is not in Hazleton stumping for Lou. Why? Because he is a Maverick, a beacon in a dark sea of deception.

Why doesn't Paul give his pay raise back to symbolize the plight of the firefighters and police in Scranton. For the last six years they have not received one red cent additional in their salaries. http://www.scrantonfire.com/?zone=/unionactive/view_article.cfm&HomeID=72147 In that same time Kanjorski's salary has increased by $24,200.00. There are other congressmen who have not taken their pay raises. It may not make a real difference in the budget but it will symbolize the plight of the workers who do not get raises or are asked to pay an increasing portion of their healthcare benefit.

I thought John McCain was a maverick as well....isn't that why he picked Palin?
If MCain, the mother of all mavericks (at least that's how the McCain supporters like to think of him) looks at the invitation from Lou and says "Uh, thanks but no thanks", I think there may be a problem somewhere...

Cmon p.j. your argument is very weak. They disagree on the immigration issue but that does not mean there hasn't been any contact with each other. As a matter of fact since that time McCain has moved in Barletta's direction although not fully.

Ed Mitchell is trying to tie Lou to Bush..Since Bush asked Kanjorski by his own words for advice usually you seek advice from people who you are friends with as in support. Ed, be careful there is a ton of information at peoples fingertips. The audacity and absurdity that he thinks his message will be heard above the facts cracks me up.

I understand that Barletta considered the old debate an empty chair ploy to protest the one debate. But he rejected the idea on the advise of staffers who were worried that he might lose to the chair.
