The flamboyant mayor of Laflin, Dorothy Yazurlo,  plowed into a couple of parked cars and acted somewhat erratic afterward. She admitted to drinking one Manhattan.

 Laflin, Luzerne County-...."Mary," who had been at a party along Laflin Road on Saturday night, said Yazrulo told people at least a dozen times she was mayor.

"They said where are you going, and she said I can't go. They said put your flashers on, you're in the middle of the road. Put your flashers on, and she put her windshield wipers on. And then she said, I'm the mayor of Laflin," according to an eyewitness....Eyewitnesses claimed only at their urging did investigators initiate a field sobriety test, which Chief Flannagan said Yazurlo passed....When asked about the allegations she boasted about her position as mayor, Yazurlo claimed she had never mentioned who she was. ...On the count of boasting, eyewitnesses claimed the mayor was being less than truthful.


Road rage is bad enough now we have drive thru rage

TL:  A Scranton woman stabbed a city man early Sunday, ultimately because of how impatient he had grown sitting behind her car in the drive-thru lane at McDonald's.

Mariah Hill, 20, 809 Alder St., did not start the fight outside the restaurant on South Washington Avenue at about 5:15 a.m. Sunday. Her victim did, according to a criminal complaint.

 The driver of the Taurus, Tarsean Neal, 21, of Linden Street, then got out of the car and either walked back to the van to explain that the wait was not his fault or began yelling profanities at its occupants, according to his account to police and that of Virgilios Arias, 20, of Hickory Street, who was in the van with Almota.

Either way, Almota got out of the van at that point, walked up to Neal and a fight ensued between them, the compliant states.

That is when Hill got out of the Taurus as well, ran over to the two men fighting and allegedly stabbed Almota in the back - which still did not end the fight.

Road Rage

As I pointed out in a post last weekend First Street is closed in the Hudson section of Plains but the repairs to the RR crossing in Laflin is complete so I'm not trapped despite the efforts of that evil PennDoT government  bureaucrat James May who wants to restrict my freedom.

The First Street sidewalk repairs are done then they moved on to fixing the bridge over Gardner's Creek but there has not been much progress.

Renee Butts for State Represenative

At a campaign event for GOP Controller candidate Bob Sypniewski a few weeks ago Renee Butts announced that she will be seeking the Republican nomination for the 118th State Rep District seat held by Democrat Mike Carroll.


Renee is a resident of Laflin and graduated from Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre. She got a BA in English from Kings College and her Masters from Wilkes University. Her hot issues are reducing property taxes, cutting wasteful spending in Harrisburg and opposes tolls on I-80. She wants to crack down on puppy mills and has a Husky named Reagan. Butts made a short speech emphasizing that she wasn't going to run away from the area like so many people who have aspirations to be a teacher but don't have the political connections to get hired. She said she will stand and fight.


She should have a website up soon. I asked her for a statement on her candidacy:

My name is Renee Butts and I am running for State Representative for the 118th Legislative District. I will cut wasteful government spending and thus lower taxes. I shall encourage more businesses offering more desirable jobs to come to our area to help combat the brain drain. I will make some changes in our state that will benefit the taxpayers.

I have been an active member of Voice of the People USA since 2007. We have spoken out for legal immigration, spoken out against drugs and crime in our communities, spoken out for free speech, and spoken out vehemently against wasteful government spending. Pennsylvania ranks 44th in the country for personal income growth. I'm hoping to better this deplorable statistic.

I have also worked for Luzerne County Commissioner Steve Urban. He has been a mentor and role model to me.

I have also volunteered at His Resting Place Maternity Home to tutor a woman residing there as well as teaching a free creative writing class. I have been closely involved with the my father, Bob Butts, in his Kindness Grant program. Among the Kindness Grants we have distributed, we have given to Wyoming Seminary Lower School to promote empathy among students and also we gave a Kindness Grant to an animal shelter to save a Siberian Husky with heart worms.

I have taken education courses at Wilkes University and completed my student teaching at Pittston Area. I am well-aware of the wasteful spending of school districts, the rife nepotism, the problems within our educational system, and also the struggles of working parents to be there for their children. I possess a BA from King's College in English/Writing and an MA in Creative Writing from Wilkes University. Cee Kay Auto is our family business. I am in touch with the struggles facing business owners and their employees.

I will, if the people choose me, hold monthly town hall meetings - each in a different area of the 118th - to address the concerns of the taxpayers and to keep them informed of what is taking place in the PA House. I am hoping that we can work together to revitalize Pennsylvania.

New Mayor in Laflin

Laflin is a little town in Luzerne County were the biggest problem lately is how to pay for garbage collection. The Mayor resigned to take another position following the departure of my old high school buddy Dave Parsnick as Police Chief. The fact that a little town of 1500 people can support a police and public works department is something I find amazing and predict it won't last much longer. They're maxed out on the property tax that is allowed without going to court and the only new revenue stream is the EMS tax that they were reluctant to levy but now have no choice.

Laflin is a nice place with well kept properties and one of my favorite restaurants, Dan's Keystone Grille. It has forest and creek and trails but I think it the most well known for is having one of the first upscale developments in the area called Oakwood Park or "millionaires row" as the locals call it. When I was a kid that was one of the best addresses around. I have no idea who lives there now but the houses and yards are well kept but nothing spectacular.

Now Dorothy Yazurlo is the new mayor and I wish her well. I don't know her very well but I've dealt with her professionally. I found her to be hard headed, detail oriented and fiercely loyal to her employees. Many tell me they miss her. She's also a ton of fun leading her Red Hat ladies all over the place.
